About Audubon Island
Audubon Island is an outer, exposed sand-bottom drop-off off Panama City, Florida, where depths fall from 5 to 25 feet along the edge. Red drum peak from August through October, and anglers work the break by inshore casting with gold spoons, jigheads with paddle tails, and soft plastic jerkbaits, or by bottom fishing with cut mullet and blue crab halves. Sheepshead take over from January through March, and bottom fishing with fiddler crabs, sand fleas, and live shrimp targets them along the deeper edge of the slope. Gray snapper peak from May through August and respond to bottom fishing with live pinfish and cut sardines, while Spanish mackerel run from March through October and hit small trolling spoons and gotcha plugs worked over the open water above the drop. Common snook also hold along the sandy edge, rounding out a species mix that gives the spot activity in every season.
