About Courtney Point
Courtney Point is an outer, exposed drop-off in the Gulf state waters off Panama City, Florida, where a sand bottom slopes from 40 to 120 feet. Spanish Mackerel run here from March through October, Gray Snapper peak from May through August, Red Drum push through from August to October, and Sheepshead take over from January through March, with Common Snook also on the target list. Gray Snapper and Sheepshead hold along the edge of the drop, where bottom fishing with live pinfish, live shrimp, or fiddler crabs works the transition from shallower sand into deeper water. Spanish Mackerel respond to small trolling spoons and diving plugs pulled across the upper edge, while metal jigs cast into surface activity cover fast-moving schools. In the fall, Red Drum take cut mullet and blue crab halves fished on the bottom along the slope.
