About Palmetto Point
Palmetto Point is an outer, exposed drop-off off Panama City, Florida, where a sand bottom falls away through depths of 260 to 660 feet within the Panhandle Region of Florida's Gulf state waters. Sheepshead peak from January through March, Spanish Mackerel run from March through October, Gray Snapper peak from May through August, and Red Drum take over from August through October, with Common Snook also on the species list. Bottom fishing along the edge of the drop targets Gray Snapper with live pinfish, live shrimp, cut sardines, and squid, while Sheepshead respond to fiddler crabs, sand fleas, and live shrimp presented on the bottom. Spanish Mackerel fall to trolling with small trolling spoons, planers with spoons, and diving plugs worked above the drop-off. In the late-summer and fall window, anglers bottom fish for Red Drum with cut mullet, cut menhaden, and blue crab halves set along the sand.
