About Smith Point
Smith Point is an exposed offshore drop-off off Panama City, Florida, where sand bottom falls away through depths of 260 to 660 feet in the Panhandle Region of Florida's Gulf state waters. The target list includes Red Drum, which peak from August through October, and Sheepshead, which peak from January through March. Gray Snapper run strongest from May through August, and Spanish Mackerel hold a long season from March through October, with Common Snook also on the species list. Bottom fishing is the main approach along the deep sand edge, with live pinfish, live shrimp, cut sardines, and squid for Gray Snapper and cut mullet, cut menhaden, or blue crab halves for Red Drum. Above the drop-off, anglers troll small spoons, feather jigs, and diving plugs for Spanish Mackerel.
