About Mayor Whibbs Reef
Mayor Whibbs Reef is an artificial reef in the federal Gulf waters off Pensacola, Florida, where placed structure draws bottom species and passing pelagics. Red Snapper peak from April through August, Gray Snapper from May through August, and Gag Grouper from October through December, with Red Grouper also holding on the reef. Bottom fishing is the dominant approach for the snapper and grouper, with live pinfish, cigar minnows, squid, and cut bait dropped tight to the structure, while vertical jigging with bucktail jigs works the same fish higher in the water column. Greater Amberjack peak in April and May and respond to live hardtails and live menhaden fished over the reef. King Mackerel run from April through October and fall to slow trolling with live cigar minnows, live blue runners, and live threadfin herring along the edges of the structure.
