Government Point is an outer-exposed rock drop-off off Newport, Oregon, where the bottom falls away through depths of 260 to 660 feet. The structure holds Lingcod, which peak from February through March, alongside Pacific Halibut that build from March into July and Black Rockfish through the spring and summer months. Chinook Salmon run strongest May through September and Coho follow from June into October, with Cabezon holding to the rocks from June through September. Anglers work the drop-off for Lingcod with metal jigs, swimbaits, and leadhead jigs, or drop live greenling and whole herring tight to the structure, while Halibut hold to drift fishing with herring, salmon bellies, octopus, and squid across the deeper water. Salmon come to trolled cut-plug herring, whole herring, and flashers with hoochies over the same exposed edge.
