About Government Point Hump

Government Point Hump is a rocky pinnacle rising in an outer, exposed stretch of water off Newport, Oregon, with depths ranging from the surface down to about 70 feet. The structure holds a strong mix of groundfish and seasonal migrants, including Pacific Halibut peaking March through July, Lingcod peaking February and March, and Black Rockfish peaking March through April and again May through August. Copper, Quillback, Yelloweye, and Canary Rockfish share the rock alongside Pacific Cod, while Chinook Salmon move through from May to September and Coho from June to October. Anglers work the pinnacle's rock edges by jigging metal jigs, leadhead jigs, and swimbaits for Lingcod and Black Rockfish, and drift herring, squid, or octopus across the structure for halibut. Salmon runs favor trolling cut-plug herring, whole herring, or flashers with hoochies over the exposed water above the hump.
