Island Rock is an outer-exposed rocky drop-off off Gold Beach, Oregon, where the bottom falls through the 0 to 50 foot range and holds structure that concentrates both salmon and groundfish. Chinook Salmon peak from July through September and Coho Salmon run from June into October, both taken by trolling cut-plug herring, spoons, and flashers along the edge, with mooching whole or cut-plug herring as a supporting approach. Pacific Halibut move through from March into August and respond to drift fishing with herring, salmon bellies, squid, or leadhead jigs worked over the rock. Lingcod hold near the structure and peak in January and February, with jigging metal jigs and swimbaits the primary method, backed by live greenling or drifted squid and cut bait. The reef also draws Canary, Yelloweye, and Widow Rockfish, Pacific Cod, and Blue Shark across the season.
