Schooner Rocks is an outer-exposed rocky drop-off off Newport, Oregon, where the bottom falls from roughly 330 to 1,310 feet. The steep rock structure holds Rockfish, including Black Rockfish, which peak from May through August, along with Lingcod that peak in February and March and Cabezon that peak June through September. Chinook Salmon run strongest May through September and Coho Salmon June through October, while Pacific Halibut peak March through July over the deeper edges. Anglers work the rock with jigging using metal jigs, leadhead jigs, and swimbaits for rockfish, lingcod, and cabezon, and drift fishing with herring, salmon bellies, octopus, and squid for halibut along the drop. Salmon are targeted higher in the column, trolling cut-plug herring, whole herring, anchovies, or flashers with hoochies for Chinook and trolling spoons, flashers, herring, or hoochies for Coho.
