South Reef is an outer-exposed sand flat off Newport, Oregon, running 20 to 45 feet deep in open water beyond the harbor. The flat holds Chinook Salmon at their peak from May through September and Coho Salmon from June into October, with both taken by trolling cut-plug herring, whole herring, anchovies, or flashers with hoochies across the sand. Pacific Halibut move through from March to July, worked with drift fishing over the bottom using herring, salmon bellies, octopus, or squid. Black Rockfish are present from March through August, responding to jigging with metal jigs, leadhead jigs, and swimbaits close to the sand. The open, unstructured bottom favors covering water on the troll for salmon and drifting bait through the halibut window.
