Yaquina Reef is an outer-exposed sand flat off Newport, Oregon, running through depths of 20 to 50 feet. The flat holds Pacific Halibut through its peak from March to July, Lingcod during a tight February–March window, and Black Rockfish that stay active from March through August. Chinook Salmon move through from May to September and Coho follow from June into October, while Cabezon peaks over the summer from June to September. For halibut, drift fishing with herring, salmon bellies, octopus, or squid works the open sand, and jigging with metal jigs and swimbaits takes lingcod, black rockfish, and cabezon over the same ground. Salmon come to trolling here, with cut-plug herring, anchovies, and flashers with hoochies for Chinook and trolling spoons or hoochies for Coho.
