Lingcod Fishing in Cowichan, BC

Lingcod hold on the rocky reefs and channels around Cowichan Bay year-round, so there is no dead season here. We cover 11 spots that hold them, including Active Pass, Cowichan Bay Reef, Danger Reefs, Enterprise Reef in Stuart Channel, the Genoa Bay area, Maple Bay at the mouth of Bird's Eye Cove, Burial Islet off Maple Bay, and Nose Point on Prevost Island. These fish are non-migratory and tied to localized structure, which means once you find a pinnacle that produces, it produces again. June through August is the peak, when post-spawn adults feed hard on herring and hake and stack up on structure. Late winter brings a mild dip while males stay tied to nests and females move off.

Current runs the day. Fish the slack. From dead slack up to about 0.5 knots you can hold bottom and keep your gear where you put it. By roughly 2.5 knots the water is unfishable, so plan your run around the window either side of high or low water.

Jigging is the dominant method. Work swimbaits, metal jigs and bucktail jigs along rocky pinnacles and reefs in 60 to 200 feet through Sansum Narrows and off Separation Point. Live bait drifting supports it. Drift a live greenling, a live small rockfish or herring just off structure in spring and early summer for the largest fish in Cowichan Bay.

When to go

Lingcod are resident year-round in the rocky reefs and channels around Cowichan Bay/Sansum Narrows, so abundance never hits zero. The pronounced peak in May–July reflects post-spawn recovery and aggressive summer feeding when adults concentrate on structure and hunt herring/hake, with a mild late-winter dip during nest-guarding when females move off and males are tied to eggs.
